Monte Toboggan Madeira: Tickets, Price, Opening Hours & What to Expect

What Is the Monte Toboggan Ride?

The Monte Toboggan ride, or Carro de Cestos, is one of Madeira’s most iconic experiences. Imagine gliding down a steep street in a wicker sled, expertly guided by two carreiros (sled drivers) dressed in traditional white uniforms and straw hats. This unique mode of transport dates back to the 19th century, when it was used by locals as a quick way to travel downhill from Monte to Funchal.

How the Experience Works

The ride begins in Monte, a hillside area above Funchal and one of the most famous places to visit in Madeira. You’ll board a two-seater or three-seater wicker sled mounted on wooden runners. Once seated, the carreiros use their strength and skill to push and steer the sled downhill.

The route is approximately 2 kilometers long and takes around 10 minutes to complete. You’ll slide along narrow, winding streets, reaching speeds of up to 30 km/h. It’s a thrilling yet safe experience, thanks to the expertise of the drivers.

The journey ends in Livramento, a residential area about halfway between Monte and Funchal city center. It’s important to note that the ride does not take you all the way back to the city, so you’ll need to plan your onward transport from Livramento.
