Monte Palace Tropical Garden: plan your visit like a local

Monte Palace Tropical Garden, how to plan a relaxed visit

I guide visitors up to Monte most weeks, and one of the places that gets the most questions is Monte Palace Tropical Garden. It sits in the Monte area, close to the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte and near the start of the traditional wicker toboggan ride. Up here the air feels cooler than down in central Funchal, the paths are shaded by tree ferns and palms, and you often hear running water before you see the lakes and waterfalls.

Monte Palace is not a formal botanical garden in the classic labelled-plant sense. It feels more like an immersive landscape garden, with water, art, tiled panels, bridges, viewpoints and quiet corners. It rewards a slow visit. Some guests pass through in 90 minutes, while others happily spend half a day exploring the paths, pausing for views and taking photos along the way.

What you will see inside

  • Lakes, streams and waterfalls. Water is one of the defining features of Monte Palace. You will find ponds, small bridges, waterfalls and reflective corners that give the garden a calm, almost theatrical atmosphere.
  • Azulejos and sculptural details. Blue-and-white tile panels appear throughout the grounds, alongside carved stone pieces, statues and decorative features tucked into the vegetation.
  • Oriental-inspired garden areas. Red bridges, pagoda-style structures, stone lanterns and carefully framed viewpoints give parts of the garden a strong oriental character.
  • Museum collections. The visit is not only outdoors. Monte Palace also includes museum areas with minerals and gemstones, as well as art displays, which add another layer to the experience.
  • Views over Funchal. From several terraces and higher paths, you can look down over the rooftops of Funchal, the harbour and the Atlantic beyond.

The garden is designed to be experienced gradually rather than rushed. The main appeal is the atmosphere: shade, running water, layered planting, and a mixture of art and landscape that feels very different from the open seafront below.

How long to spend and the best times to visit

Most visitors are happy with around 1.5 to 2.5 hours, though photographers and slower walkers may want longer. If you enjoy gardens, viewpoints and details like tiled panels and sculptures, it is worth allowing extra time rather than treating it as a quick stop.

Early morning is usually the calmest time to visit, especially before larger groups arrive. Late afternoon can also be pleasant, with softer light and a quieter feel. Midday is often the busiest part of the day.

Because Monte sits above Funchal, it is often cooler than the city centre and can occasionally feel misty or damp. Comfortable shoes with grip are a good idea, especially after rain, as some paths and steps can become slippery.

How to get to Monte Palace from Funchal

  • Cable car from the Old Town. This is one of the most popular ways to reach Monte. The journey gives wide views over Funchal, and from the Monte station it is an easy walk to one of the garden entrances. Cable car tickets are separate from garden entry.
  • Private tuk tuk. A tuk tuk is a direct and scenic way to get up to Monte from your hotel, accommodation or the cruise area. If you want to combine the garden with the toboggan ride, our Funchal: Monte Toboggan & Monte Palace Tuk Tuk Tour keeps the logistics simple.
  • Taxi or local bus. Both are possible and practical. Driving yourself is less relaxing, as roads are narrow and parking in Monte can be limited.

There are multiple entrances to Monte Palace, including one near the cable car station, so you do not necessarily need to approach from the same side as the church.

Tickets and practical information

  • Ticket price. At the time of writing, entry is 18 € per adult. Children up to 14 years old accompanied by an adult can enter free of charge. It is still best to check the official Monte Palace website for any updates before you go.
  • Opening hours. The garden is generally open daily, with seasonal hours. Opening times can change depending on the time of year, so it is worth confirming on the official website on the day of your visit.
  • Facilities. Inside you will find toilets, a café and a shop. The café is useful for a short break, coffee or a light snack during the visit.
  • Accessibility. The garden is steep in places and includes many steps, sloping paths and uneven surfaces. Some routes are easier than others, and there is also an internal trolley service in part of the garden, which can help some visitors.
  • Families. Families can visit comfortably, but a baby carrier is often easier than a stroller in the steeper lower sections.

A simple route that works well

  1. Start from the entrance that best suits your arrival, whether from the church side or the cable car side.
  2. Begin with the upper viewpoints and take in the wider views over Funchal and the bay.
  3. Follow the paths down toward the main lakes, bridges and waterfalls, moving slowly enough to notice the details along the way.
  4. Pause near the café if you want a short rest before continuing.
  5. Explore the oriental-style sections, tiled panels and museum areas before making your way back up.

Signage inside the garden is generally clear, and you can shorten or extend the loop depending on your time and energy. The important thing is not to rush, Monte Palace works best as a relaxed, unhurried visit.

Pairing Monte Palace with the toboggan ride

The traditional wicker toboggan starts beside the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte, only a short walk from the garden area. This makes Monte Palace an easy place to combine with one of Madeira’s best-known experiences.

If you plan to do both, timing matters. On busy cruise days, queues for the toboggan can become very long, sometimes reaching two to three hours. In those cases, it may be smarter to do the toboggan first if you can arrive early, and then enjoy the garden afterwards at a slower pace.

It is also worth remembering that the toboggan ride finishes in Livramento, not in central Funchal, so you will normally need a taxi or tuk tuk pickup afterwards. If you want the day organised more simply, our Funchal: Monte Toboggan & Monte Palace Tuk Tuk Tour takes care of the logistics. If you prefer to focus on the toboggan and the city rather than the garden, look at Monte Toboggan + Old Town.

Monte Palace or Madeira Botanical Garden?

If you are deciding between Monte Palace and the Madeira Botanical Garden, the choice depends more on mood than on quality. Monte Palace feels more immersive and atmospheric, with water, art, shaded paths and layered landscaping. The Madeira Botanical Garden Tuk Tuk Tour suits visitors who prefer more open views, a clearer plant-collection feel and a simpler layout.

Both are good choices for a half-day outing, but Monte Palace usually appeals most to visitors who want a slower, more atmospheric garden experience.

Quick tips from a local guide

  • Start early or arrive later in the afternoon for a calmer visit.
  • Wear shoes with grip, especially in wet weather.
  • Allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours if you want to enjoy it properly.
  • Check the official website for the latest opening times and ticket details before visiting.
  • If combining with the toboggan, try to reach Monte early on busy days.

If you want help planning the easiest way up to Monte, or combining the garden with the toboggan, cable car or other stops in Funchal, feel free to ask. A little planning makes this part of Madeira much more relaxed and enjoyable.
